Bobby walked back the way he had come, defiantly and purposefully striding through the shell-strewn sand. Unexpected exhilaration filled him with energy as he walked. The breeze had picked up a notch or two and cajoled him along to the old pier that claimed dominion over the immediate vicinity. He stopped when he reached the creosote pillars supporting the substantial, but weathered, structure and peered once again to the point where water and sky melded into one. He focused on the ghostly rim of the Earth, where the foggy shadows of large shipping vessels on their way to the port at Wilmington could often be seen, and their baritone bellowing heard. Memories were all he had now, but he had chosen to survive, and his memories would sustain him. As he stood there enraptured, his thoughts transported him back to an easier time. The vision of his past became more lucid with each breaking wave, and he could almost here the whisper of Blake’s voice calling to him, rising to a crescendo as it rode in on the crest of the timeless surf and dissolved into whispers at his feet. |
